A father and son in northern California are facing federal charges following the alleged kidnapping of two U.S. Forest Service employees. U.S. Attorney Eric Grant confirmed the arrests and impending charges during a press conference, detailing how the federal workers were reportedly held captive for several hours.
Incident Unfolds
Joseph Charles Henrichsen, 49, and his son, Phoenix Henrichsen, are accused of taking the two federal workers hostage inside a trailer situated in a secluded area near Mt. Shasta. The incident occurred specifically near Gumboot Lake, within the Shasta Trinity National Forest.
Authorities were first alerted to the kidnapping shortly before 11 a.m. local time on Thursday when a Forest Service employee contacted them. The elder Henrichsen allegedly ziptied the hostages and confined them within the trailer, demanding to speak directly with the FBI.
Hostage Negotiations and Release
In response to the developing crisis, the FBI dispatched a specialized hostage negotiator from Quantico to the scene. This federal team collaborated closely with local law enforcement to engage in talks with the alleged kidnappers. After hours of intensive negotiations, authorities successfully secured the release of the first hostage at approximately 1:50 a.m. on Friday. The second hostage was freed just 15 minutes later. The father-son duo subsequently surrendered to FBI agents at 2:30 a.m.
Official Response and Legal Action
Following the safe resolution of the ordeal, Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz released a statement expressing profound relief and gratitude.
"I’m grateful beyond words that both of our Forest Service employees taken hostage on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest are home safe. This was a frightening experience for everyone involved. Their well-being continues to be our highest priority. We’re staying close to them and their loved ones, making sure they have the support and the space that they need after what they’ve been through."
U.S. Attorney Eric Grant stated that his office intends to file criminal complaints against both men. They are expected to be charged with kidnapping a federal employee, a violation under Title 18, United States Code, Section 1201(a)(5).
As of now, the FBI has not disclosed any information regarding the motivation behind the alleged kidnapping or the reasons for the Henrichsens' specific request to communicate with the bureau.
