A recent incident at the Empire State Building, where a couple ascended the 1,454-foot antenna to perform a marriage proposal, has prompted significant questions regarding the iconic landmark's security protocols. The pair was subsequently arrested, drawing attention to how they managed to access such a restricted area.
Eyewitness Account Details Access Point
Julie Morris, a visitor to New York City, recounted to WABC-TV her experience witnessing the audacious stunt unfold. She stated that while on the building's 102nd-floor observation deck, she observed two individuals pass through a mesh barrier into what appeared to be an unauthorized zone leading directly towards the antenna.
"Well, I was on the top, the very top, along come these two people. Opened the mesh. Assumed they worked there and nobody stopped them," Morris explained.
Authorities are now reviewing surveillance footage and suspect the couple gained entry to the antenna structure via a locked maintenance hatch on the 102nd-floor observation deck. Investigators believe the climbers may have previously observed staff movements to identify this potential access point. Detectives are actively investigating the mechanism used to open the hatch.
The Climbers and Their High-Altitude Stunt
The individuals involved were identified as Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, a Russian couple with an international reputation for scaling towering structures globally. Their exploits, which often involve unauthorized rooftop climbs, were featured in the 2024 Netflix documentary "Skywalkers: A Love Story."
After reaching the Empire State Building's prominent transmitter, the couple unrolled a banner displaying the message, "When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace." Following this, they embraced, and Kuznetsov proceeded to kneel, presenting a marriage proposal.
Upon Nikolau's acceptance, she admired the engagement ring. The couple then began their descent from the spire, where officers from the New York City Police Department's Emergency Service Unit were waiting to take them into custody.
Arrest and Charges Filed
Police charged the couple with a range of offenses, including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, criminal trespass, criminal tampering, possession of burglar's tools, and disorderly conduct, among other violations.
News helicopter footage captured images of Nikolau and Kuznetsov, clad in black and seemingly without safety tethers, balancing precariously on a narrow ledge atop the antenna. They were then seen climbing back down through the spire's latticework. Subsequent bodycam footage from the NYPD showed officers greeting the pair inside the structure before safely escorting them away.
Nikolau later shared images of the proposal and the engagement ring on various social media platforms.
Building Management Responds Amidst Disruption
The Empire State Building management described the ascent as "unauthorized." In a formal statement, they asserted that "at no time danger to tenants, visitors, and Empire State Building Observation Deck guests" was present. The statement also noted that the observation deck "does offer a practical way for the most memorable marriage proposals," implicitly suggesting safer alternatives.
The incident caused a temporary disruption to visits at the landmark, leading to the evacuation of some tourists from the observation decks while law enforcement responded to the situation.
Another witness, Laura Staub, commented on her initial reaction to the event:
"At first, it was kind of like comical and seemed a little bit wild and crazy. And then I'll be honest, once you're out on the observation deck, I was like, I feel like we shouldn't be out here. It didn't really seem like super safe."
The Empire State Building did not provide specific details regarding how the climbers accessed the antenna or whether there were any interactions with security personnel before they entered the restricted zone.
