A significant crash during Saturday morning practice has subsequently ruled him out of the day's qualifying session.
Incident Details and Medical Update
Malukas, who is competing in his debut season driving the No. 12 Chevrolet, experienced a loss of control in the rear of his vehicle mid-corner. The car then made heavy contact with the SAFER barrier, impacting left rear first. The force of the collision caused extensive damage, particularly to the rear section of Malukas's car.
The incident brought an immediate end to Malukas's practice run. Initial reports indicated he was "awake, alert and in good spirits" following the impact. However, it was later confirmed that Malukas had been transported to a nearby hospital for comprehensive testing and evaluation.
Team Changes and Race Implications
Following the crash, veteran IndyCar competitor Conor Daly has been designated to take over Malukas's car for the qualifying session. Malukas's participation in Saturday evening's practice and Sunday's main event, the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix, is currently uncertain. Adding to the weekend's challenges, Malukas was already slated to incur a nine-place grid penalty for the race, stemming from an unapproved engine change.
Significant repairs are required for the damaged vehicle. Should the car be prepared in time for qualifying, Daly's primary objective would be a shakedown run to confirm its readiness for the remainder of the race weekend, irrespective of the driver. Team personnel continued to work on reassembling the car even as qualifying commenced. A crucial rule dictates that if Daly participates in qualifying, he must continue driving for the duration of the weekend, even if Malukas recovers sufficiently to return.
Malukas's Strong Season Performance
Despite the setback, Malukas has enjoyed a commendable debut season with one of IndyCar's top teams. The 24-year-old Chicago native currently holds fourth place in the championship standings, trailing leader Àlex Palou by 66 points. While he is still pursuing his inaugural victory, Malukas has secured one pole position, achieved five top-five finishes, and nine top-ten placements this year, notably earning a second-place finish at the Indianapolis 500.
Just this week, Malukas was among a select group of three drivers, including Palou and Indianapolis 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist, who visited the White House in anticipation of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C.
