Senator Darline Graham, a Republican representing South Carolina, publicly articulated her political agenda in an interview on Monday, confirming her campaign for a complete six-year Senate term in the upcoming November election.
Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, expressed her commitment to continuing her brother's dedicated service. “He's worked so hard for so long. I can’t just let that die. I've got to step in and carry on his legacy,” she stated during her initial interview since her brother's passing.
“I know he cared about the people of South Carolina so deeply. He worked so hard for them. And I feel like I can do that, too. He taught me well,” she added, reflecting on her inspiration.
Stepping into a Legacy
Last week, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Graham to complete the remainder of her late brother’s Senate term, which extends until January 2027. Her announcement on Monday signifies her ambition to secure a full, six-year mandate from voters.
Acknowledging the weight of her new role, Graham remarked, “It is a tremendous amount of pressure.” However, she also conveyed a sense of readiness and resolve, stating, “I feel like I can do it. I feel an inner peace about it.”
Focusing on Domestic Priorities
Graham indicated a distinct policy approach compared to her brother, who was notably engaged in international affairs, particularly the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. She intends to primarily address domestic issues, shifting focus away from foreign policy to concentrate more on the day-to-day concerns of South Carolinians.
“I used to see him on the talk shows. I would watch him and I'd be like, ‘Lindsey, are you just talking about national security all the time?',” she recounted. “And I understand that's important. Protecting our borders, national security, absolutely.”
She continued, “I said, ‘But talk about also what matters to the average person. The price of groceries, the price of gas, health care. Insurance, those kind of things.’ That's what I'm worried about.”
Personal Loss and Public Service
Lindsey Graham passed away unexpectedly on July 11 at the age of 71. His cause of death was later determined to be an aortic dissection stemming from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
The loss has deeply affected Darline Graham. “It's been tough, extremely tough,” she shared. “He was everything, he was my rock. He was my brother, my mother, and my father.”
Since 2019, Graham has contributed to public service as a commissioner for South Carolina’s Commission for the Blind. In this capacity, she has overseen a substantial $90 million budget, dedicated to programs that assist individuals who are blind or visually impaired in securing employment.
Regarding her work with the commission, she commented, “It was a passion of mine, but I have a servant's heart. You have to have a servant's heart for a job like that.”
