Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson has robustly refuted assertions that businesses are losing confidence in the city's downtown core, characterizing such claims as "a bunch of bull." The mayor emphasized Dallas's leading role in post-pandemic economic recovery, highlighting several major business investments that underscore the city's appeal.
Mayor Highlights Economic Growth
Among the significant developments cited by Mayor Johnson is the establishment of a new Goldman Sachs campus, projected to create approximately 5,000 jobs. He also noted Frontier Communications' decision to relocate its headquarters from Connecticut to Dallas, alongside Morgan Stanley's consideration of an expansion within the city. Further bolstering his argument, Johnson mentioned that major financial institutions, including Nasdaq, the Texas Stock Exchange, and the New York Stock Exchange, are establishing a presence in Dallas.
While acknowledging the closure of the Neiman Marcus downtown store, Johnson pointed out that the luxury retailer still plans to invest in its NorthPark Center location, situated about 13 minutes from downtown Dallas. He also noted that other prominent entities like Fifth Third and the Dallas Mavericks would maintain their presence in the city, albeit outside the immediate downtown area.
"Does that sound like a loss of confidence, or does it sound like winning?" he questioned. "The truth is that Dallas is safer, stronger, and more vibrant than it was before this Administration inherited a city that had uncompetitive tax rates, increasing crime, and police ranks that had been decimated."
Ongoing Challenges and Future Plans
Despite the positive trajectory, Mayor Johnson conceded that there is still work to be done to further enhance the city's prospects.
"The work is not finished," Johnson wrote. "The City Council will soon consider asking voters to approve a public safety bond package to give Dallas a police academy worthy of its police department and to shore up the Dallas Police & Fire Pension System to finally resolve a lingering mess that past leaders left behind. This year’s budget also figures to be a challenging one, and it will be important to work closely with the city manager to make appropriate cuts and to ensure that public safety remains the top priority."
These remarks from the mayor come after Governor Greg Abbott's commendation in April, celebrating Texas's recognition as the Best State for Business for the 22nd consecutive year by Chief Executive magazine.
