Federal health authorities are working to pinpoint the origin of a tiny parasite responsible for extended gastrointestinal distress as reported cases nationwide increase with the arrival of summer. As of mid-June 2026, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had verified 145 instances of cyclosporiasis across 17 states, all stemming from infections acquired within the United States.
The causative agent is Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite known to induce cyclosporiasis. A primary symptom of this infection is persistent, watery diarrhea, often described as "explosive," which can endure for several weeks or even months if not properly treated, according to CDC reports.
Patients may also experience severe abdominal cramping, bloating, nausea, profound fatigue, and significant weight loss. The CDC identifies the official outbreak period for this parasite as May 1 through August 31, a timeframe when historical data indicates a rise in infections coinciding with warmer temperatures.
Rising Case Numbers and Geographic Impact
Cases have been identified in various states, stretching from Texas up to Alaska. New York has reported the highest number of infections to date, with counts ranging from 31 to 80. Texas and Illinois follow, each reporting between 11 and 30 cases.
While some infections may resolve independently, treatment with antibiotics is frequently necessary. Of the 145 confirmed cases, 20 individuals have required hospitalization, based on CDC data. No fatalities have been reported thus far. Affected individuals span an age range from 5 to 86 years, with a median age of 42. Women constitute a majority of the reported cases, accounting for 61%.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Health Advice
The CDC, in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state health departments, is actively investigating several multi-state clusters of the illness. Despite these efforts, a definitive source behind the widespread transmission has yet to be identified.
In its surveillance report, the CDC stated, "There is currently no evidence of a single, multistate Cyclospora outbreak linking all cases." This indicates that multiple, possibly unrelated, sources might be contributing to the current increase in infections.
The CDC advises anyone experiencing symptoms consistent with cyclosporiasis to seek medical consultation for appropriate testing and treatment. Early diagnosis and intervention can help manage the illness and prevent its prolonged effects.
