Long before major American milestones like the introduction of the Model T, the advent of flight, or the welcoming of immigrants by the Statue of Liberty, Corning had already established itself as a beacon of innovation, a tradition it maintains to this day.

While widely recognized for the glass cookware that has been a staple in American kitchens for generations, Corning has also dedicated decades to developing technologies that have subtly revolutionized the modern world. This ranges from the glass components in Thomas Edison's early light bulbs to the resilient screens protecting billions of contemporary smartphones.

Now nearing its 175th anniversary, Corning is once again at the forefront of a technological transformation. As the need for artificial intelligence infrastructure rapidly expands, the New York-based manufacturer is significantly increasing its production of optical fiber, which forms the core of the high-speed networks essential for powering AI.

In a strategic move, the company is also collaborating with NVIDIA, the prominent chipmaker central to the AI revolution, to generate 3,000 new jobs across two states.

At a time when many individuals express concerns that artificial intelligence might displace human workers, Wendell Weeks, Corning's Chairman, CEO, and President, asserts that the opposite trend is unfolding within one of the nation’s oldest manufacturing firms.

Weeks noted that the surge in AI development is directly responsible for increasing the need for Corning's optical fiber products, propelling the company into its most significant growth phase in almost 200 years.

“As a 175-year-old company, we're going through our fastest growth period,” Weeks stated. “We will probably double our size over the coming years and almost all of our new hires will be in advanced manufacturing, a significant part of them right here in America.”

A Legacy of Innovation Meets AI Demand

This period of expansion is already evident on Corning’s manufacturing floors. One employee, who was not identified by her first name, shared her perspective.

“Right now, the world needs our glass optical fiber to support the AI demand we're seeing,” she said. “It's a great feeling on the factory floor.”

These observations underscore a broader industrial pattern. While much of the public's attention on AI has centered on the developers of chips and software, companies like Corning are providing the fundamental glass technology that interconnects AI systems and underpins the industry's rapid expansion. This investment is already leading to the establishment of new facilities in the U.S. and the creation of American employment opportunities.

Expanding U.S. Manufacturing and Workforce

Earlier this year, NVIDIA partnered with Corning to construct three advanced optical manufacturing plants in North Carolina and Texas. This initiative is projected to create over 3,000 jobs across both states, simultaneously boosting Corning's U.S. optical manufacturing capacity tenfold.

Having collaborated with notable innovators such as Apple co-founder Steve Jobs throughout his career, Weeks expressed pride in now partnering with NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang as Corning contributes to building the essential infrastructure for the AI revolution.

While companies like NVIDIA have become virtually synonymous with artificial intelligence, Weeks pointed out that many people tend to overlook the critical function optical fiber performs in linking AI systems.

“The common story is AI being powered by chips, but actually, those chips are connected by glass,” Weeks clarified.

Global Investment Bolsters Domestic Production

The burgeoning AI manufacturing sector is not only stimulating growth among established American enterprises such as Corning but is also drawing foreign investment into U.S. manufacturing. Wistron, an electronics manufacturer based in Taiwan, is establishing AI supercomputer manufacturing operations in Texas for NVIDIA, bringing advanced manufacturing positions to the state.

A Wistron representative added, “Texas offers the talent, industrial strength, and strategic location to help power the next generation of AI infrastructure, while creating durable, high-value jobs at scale for the local workforce.”

As the United States approaches its 250th year of independence, Weeks emphasized that the nation’s next era of innovation will rely not only on groundbreaking ideas but also on the domestic production of those advancements.

“The tools change, but the approach doesn't,” Weeks concluded.
