Chrissy Metz, known for her acclaimed role in "This Is Us," recently opened up about the persistent public scrutiny surrounding her weight, while also detailing her personal decision to begin using a GLP-1 medication. The 45-year-old actress shared her experiences during appearances on "The Tamsen Show" podcast and "Today."
Navigating Public Commentary
Metz expressed her ongoing frustration with individuals who comment on her physique, stating, "It's not that I don't have people and naysayers and people who comment all kinds of stuff still to this day. Like I don't know when people will stop doing that. I don't think it ever will happen."
She recounted a recent incident involving a distant relative who commended her for "taking control of your weight," noting that "weight has always been an issue in our family." Metz acknowledged that this relative, who also identifies as an "overweight woman," understands the challenges associated with body image, which made those particular comments less impactful. However, she found other public remarks "wild."
"It's interesting what people say cause would they ever say it to you on the streets? Never. Never," Metz observed. She highlighted the intrusive nature of such comments, offering an example: "Oh, Chrissy, you're pretty, but them eyebrows." She added, "Oh my god, it doesn't matter what I do. It doesn't matter."
The actress listed typical criticisms she receives, including questions like, "Why'd you wear that? Why did you do this? Like why aren't you losing weight? Oh, you're losing weight?" She concluded, "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter what you do. And I know it's not personal, but it can be taxing, but you sometimes just got to just shut it off cuz no matter what you do, somebody's going to have something to say."
Currently starring in the Broadway production "& Juliet," Metz characterized facing such scrutiny while pursuing her aspirations as "an act of rebellion."
Her Journey with GLP-1 Medication
Metz also openly discussed her use of a GLP-1 medication during her recent media appearances. She revealed her initial "skepticism" toward GLP-1s, describing it as something she "was so afraid of even sort of partaking in."
Her perspective shifted following a profound personal event: her father's passing due to complications related to obesity. This tragedy prompted a critical reassessment of her own health.
One significant benefit she experienced from the medication was the reduction of what she termed "food noise" – persistent, intrusive thoughts about food – which she described as being "loud" before treatment.
"I know it sounds so silly now, but I'm like, 'Oh, not everybody hears that all the time? Oh, okay. Oh, there's like something chemically off and metabolically off and hereditary, you know, issues,'" she explained, recognizing that her experience wasn't universal. She emphasized, "And so really when that happened with my family and my father, I was like, I have to do something about it. And so, yeah...I feel better on the medication."
The actress has since partnered with Ro, a telehealth company that offers various medical services, including support for weight management.
