Veteran comedian and political commentator Bill Maher delivered a pointed admonition to the Democratic Party regarding the impending midterm elections. His remarks followed recent primary victories by several far-left candidates.
Maher, known for his incisive political commentary, suggested that Democrats are "well on their way" to undermining their prospects in the November midterms. He specifically cited the election of three "outright really crazy" socialists in New York's primary contests last week, who prevailed over more mainstream Democratic contenders.
Last Tuesday, three individuals identifying as socialists—Darializa Avila Chevalier, New York State Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, and former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander—all secured Democratic primary nominations in various New York City congressional districts.
Following this series of socialist victories, Maher was questioned on Sunday at an event in Washington, D.C., about previous assertions he made two months prior, suggesting the Democratic Party had the 2026 midterms well within its grasp.
"I did say that, it was about two months ago, and you see how quickly the news changes in just two months," Maher stated. He elaborated that his earlier assessment predated a significant Supreme Court decision concerning voting rights, referring to the April ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which found that congressional districts in that state had been unconstitutionally racially gerrymandered.
Maher, who has increasingly become a spokesperson for moderate Democratic viewpoints, made these observations just before he was presented with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He hosts the program "Real Time with Bill Maher" on HBO.
"So, that has changed just in the last two months and then the Democrats just elected three very far-left democratic socialists in New York who are crazy — like outright really crazy — so like, how are they gonna blow it? I don't know but they seem to be well on their way," Maher remarked.
Concerns Over Party Direction
Maher's sentiments resonate with a growing chorus of Democrats expressing apprehension about a potential shift towards a far-left socialist ideology within the party.
Darializa Avila Chevalier, one of the victorious candidates, is recognized for her staunch anti-borders activism and has advocated for the complete dismantling of police forces and correctional facilities. She also posted a series of anti-American statements on a social media account, which has since been deactivated.
On multiple occasions, Chevalier criticized the United States, once describing her native country as "a f---ing disgrace." In another deleted post, she reportedly stated, "I forgot to get napkins so I just wiped my hand on the American flag behind me."
Chevalier has also called for the abolition of prisons and police and has been noted for mocking Black and Arab men for "fetishizing ugly colonizer women," a term she used to refer to white women.
Other Candidates' Controversies and Intra-Party Criticism
Claire Valdez, another successful primary candidate, has openly championed the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), characterizing it as a "fascist agency" and accusing it of "terrorizing" communities and "kidnapping" individuals.
Brad Lander, while having withdrawn from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in 2023 over its response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israeli concertgoers that killed 1,200 people, has also advocated for the abolition of ICE and the defunding of the New York City Police Department (NYPD). He has also been accused of employing anti-white rhetoric, at one point suggesting he could be considered a white supremacist simply due to his skin color.
James Carville, a veteran Democratic strategist, asserted that Avila Chevalier should not be eligible to serve in Congress under the Democratic Party banner.
"I don't have anything in common with someone that says that they're against interracial dating or doesn't want to have any incarceration for convicted felons."
Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat representing Pennsylvania, has also voiced his disapproval regarding the perceived rise of socialist influence within his own party.
"Anti-Israel. Anti-America. Anti-Western Civilization," he wrote on X. "Why am I the only Democrat in the U.S. Senate that refuses to excuse this or defend any of those self-identified communists?"
