Balogun was shown a red card in the 64th minute following a decision that has sparked widespread controversy. Contrasting Incidents: Balogun vs. Messi

In Balogun’s case, the red card was issued after he stepped on the back of Tarik Muharemovic’s leg, resulting in a rolled ankle. This occurred while both players were vying for possession of an incoming ball. A VAR review upheld the decision. Despite the contact, it appeared there was no malicious intent from Balogun; he was merely attempting to land on his right leg after being bumped himself, and his foot unfortunately came down on Muharemovic.

Lalas immediately recalled an incident from Argentina’s World Cup opener against Algeria. In that instance, Messi was seen digging his cleat into the back of an Algerian player’s calf while attempting to gain control of the ball. Lalas shared a clip of this event on X with the succinct caption, "'Sup," clearly implying a comparison between the two situations. Messi faced no on-field or post-match disciplinary action for what many perceived as a more severe action than Balogun's, particularly given that Messi appeared to be looking down at his opponent’s leg from behind just before the contact.

Conversely, Balogun was not observing the back of Muharemovic's right leg when the contact occurred, though the potential for injury from the rolled ankle was evident.
