Ryan Lasko, a highly-rated prospect within the Athletics organization, is currently in stable condition following a significant spinal surgery. The procedure, involving decompression and stabilization, addressed a C6-C7 vertebra fracture he sustained during a recent game.
Severe Injury During Outfield Collision
The injury occurred earlier this week during a Double-A game on Tuesday, involving the Midland RockHounds. Lasko, playing center field, collided with right fielder Devin Taylor as both players pursued a ball hit into the outfield gap.
The 24-year-old remained on the ground for approximately ten minutes following the impact. He was eventually transported off the field via a cart and taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, where he subsequently underwent surgery.
Currently, Lasko has reported a loss of sensation in his legs. Dr. Jonathan Poggi, the surgeon who performed the operation, indicated that there is optimism regarding Lasko's potential to regain feeling, though he cautioned that the recovery process could be lengthy.
Witnesses and video replays of the incident reveal the severity of the collision. Initial views might not fully convey the impact, but closer examination shows Lasko's neck making direct contact with Taylor's chest and shoulder region. He collapsed instantly and remained motionless on the field, a moment described by observers as profoundly alarming.
Despite the gravity of the situation, some fans present at the game noted that Lasko managed to offer a thumbs-up gesture as he was being removed from the field. However, it is evident that a substantial period of recovery will be necessary before he can return to competitive play.
Medical Prognosis and Manager's Comments
Speaking before Wednesday's game, Athletics manager Mark Kotsay addressed the collision, expressing optimism for Lasko's recovery of sensation in his lower extremities.
"It's obviously going to take time," Kotsay stated. "But, the positive in the statement from the doctor is that there was not a definitive statement saying that he was not going to regain feeling in his lower half. Send prayers to him, his family, to the teammate and the team. It's a trying time for them. It's an emotional time for them."
Lasko's Promising Career Background
Lasko was selected by the Athletics in the second round of the 2023 MLB Draft after a collegiate career at Rutgers University. Earlier this year, he participated in the Athletics' big league spring training camp.
