Ocasio-Cortez Advises Democratic Incumbents on Engaging New Socialist House Nominees from NYC

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) recently shared a cautionary message with her fellow congressional Democrats, prompted by a series of significant victories by Democratic Socialist candidates in New York City's primary elections this week.

During an interview with Jen Psaki on Friday, Representative Ocasio-Cortez was initially asked for guidance she might offer to the two newly nominated Democratic House candidates, both members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA): Darializa Avila Chevalier and State Assemblywoman Claire Valdez.

Psaki inquired about the counsel Ocasio-Cortez would give these new members, who are already facing specific portrayals, asking how they could effectively implement change while simultaneously challenging established norms.

Ocasio-Cortez responded by noting that "New and incoming members have no shortage of advice that's being given to them." Psaki interjected, highlighting Ocasio-Cortez's unique experience: "But you lived it. And you lived it in a very different way."

However, Ocasio-Cortez redirected her focus, emphasizing that her more crucial advice was directed at incumbent members of the House. She stated, "I'll get to them, but I actually think the more important advice that I would give would be to my incumbent colleagues — which is you will create a self-fulfilling prophecy by deciding who these young women are before you've met them."

She cautioned her colleagues against forming hasty judgments about the incoming representatives, advising them not to foster an "antagonistic dynamic" before the nominees even arrive on Capitol Hill. Ocasio-Cortez elaborated, "If you are already panicking and sending little messages in your group chats about how these people need to be reined in and tamped down and shown their place, you are creating the antagonistic dynamic that we do not need." She concluded by highlighting their achievements: "These are two young, talented, intelligent women that got elected against all odds — against millions of dollars. Perhaps there is something we can learn from them."

A Call for Open-Mindedness

Earlier this week, Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez, alongside progressive Democrat and former DSA member Brad Lander, gained significant attention after securing primary victories in three predominantly Democratic districts. Their campaigns received an endorsement from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Chevalier has faced considerable scrutiny for past remarks made on social media, particularly on X, where she targeted other prominent Democrats. These included former President Joe Biden, whom she labeled a "rapist" and a "war criminal," Vice President Kamala Harris, towards whom she directed a series of expletives, and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), whom she criticized for his "liberal Zionism."

Critics also highlighted earlier statements from Chevalier disparaging the United States, including one instance where she described the nation as "a f---ing disgrace." In a post that has since been removed, she reportedly wrote, "I forgot to get napkins so I just wiped my hand on the American flag behind me."

Despite the significant backlash Chevalier's past remarks have generated, Representative Ocasio-Cortez presented a more empathetic perspective during her conversation with Psaki. Referring to Chevalier, Ocasio-Cortez stated, "She has indicated that she has regret over the way that she issued those statements." She added, "And I genuinely believe the gravity and responsibility of this role has a way of inhabiting you." Ocasio-Cortez further emphasized, "I genuinely believe that we have to give people the opportunity to occupy their beliefs within the gravity of becoming a duly elected member of Congress."
