Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) recently faced an unexpected question from a media outlet regarding her potential dating preferences. The progressive legislator was queried about whether she would consider a relationship with someone holding conservative views, particularly following reports of her separation from fiancé Riley Roberts.
Charlie Cotton, the DC managing editor for TMZ, approached Ocasio-Cortez outside the Capitol Hill complex. He directly asked, "Would you ever date a conservative? Is that [something] you'd ever entertain?"
The New York congresswoman, a prominent figure often associated with "The Squad," reacted with immediate laughter to the inquiry.
After a moment, she responded, "Um, I'd have to say... probably not," accompanied by another chuckle.
When pressed further on her hesitation to date across the political spectrum, Ocasio-Cortez explained that she saw "no foul" in individuals who manage to separate political beliefs from romantic relationships. She elaborated, stating, "I think a lot of politics sometimes, at least for me, is about values and being aligned in values is tremendously important."
Navigating Political Divides in Romance
Veteran political strategist James Carville, a former operative for Bill Clinton, offered his own insights on the intersection of politics and dating. He expressed regret over the modern tendency for people to "use politics as a reason to date or not date somebody," a consideration he personally set aside during his time as a single man.
Carville humorously recalled his own approach to dating, explaining, "In my case, I wasn't good-looking enough. I had to broaden the base, okay. I just couldn't concentrate on Democratic women. I mean, I needed love." He playfully referenced Woody Allen, saying, "I think it was Woody Allen that said the good thing about being bisexual, it doubles your chances of getting a date. Well, I couldn't go — I wasn't that! I couldn't get that far, so I decided 'Well, I'll start dating Republicans. That'll double my chances to get a date, you know.' Some of it is just, you know, self-preservation."
Carville then shared a piece of advice directed at young progressive figures, such as Ocasio-Cortez, concerning their approach to life and relationships. "Get over your preening and your moral superiority," Carville advised. He emphasized that adopting a more pragmatic outlook would lead to greater personal happiness and political success.
He concluded by stressing the importance of winning elections to effect change. "And the more pragmatic in how you approach life, you'll end up being a lot happier, and you'll actually win an election. And therefore, you can actually do things, and you could do some of the things that you want, because if you lose, it doesn't do any good. It's about nothing. That's what I would tell them."
