International Fleet Gathers in New Jersey to Launch America 250 Semiquincentennial Celebrations
A global array of historic tall ships has converged off the New Jersey coast, initiating the monumental commemoration of the nation's 250th anniversary.
U.S.·

An impressive international fleet of historic tall ships recently arrived off the New Jersey coast, signaling the commencement of America's semiquincentennial celebrations, a once-in-a-generation event.
Officials and organizers convened in Sandy Hook to detail the extensive scope of the historic Sail4th 250 tribute.
A Site Steeped in History
Governor Mikie Sherrill, a former naval officer, highlighted Sandy Hook's profound historical significance, stating:
Nearly 250 years ago, it was here at Sandy Hook that George Washington's army drove the British from New Jersey. It was from this day that the last British ships of the Revolutionary War departed.
The area is also home to the nation's oldest continuously operating lighthouse, which has served as a vital guide for maritime navigators since 1764. Today, this historic site is preserved within the Gateway National Recreation Area, a sprawling 27,000-acre national park spanning both New York and New Jersey, attracting over 9 million visitors annually.
Global Alliance on Display
Approximately 20 nations have dispatched their premier tall ships to participate in the festivities, with vessels journeying from diverse countries such as Italy, India, Peru, Poland, Spain, and Sweden.
Leading the official parade of ships will be the distinguished U.S. Coast Guard cutter Eagle. This vessel, acquired as a war reparation from Nazi Germany, holds the unique distinction of being the only active square-rigged sailing vessel in federal service, having been sailed by every cadet from the Coast Guard Academy.
Governor Sherrill underscored that the presence of these international crews signifies more than just a tourist attraction; it stands as a powerful affirmation of robust global security alliances.
America never fights alone because we fight alongside our friends and allies. Today, it's a joy to be here to celebrate with all of our allies and friends.
Extensive Planning and Upcoming Events
According to Christopher O'Brien, president of Sail4th 250, planning for this monumental maritime review has been ongoing since April 2020, involving intricate coordination with foreign military attachés.
The main celebratory events are scheduled to begin Saturday morning and will feature a Tall Ships Parade, an International Naval Review, and a synchronized International Aerial Review.
Reflecting on past national celebrations, Governor Sherrill drew a parallel to the country's 1976 bicentennial commemoration:
Fifty years ago, people lined the Hudson to cheer hundreds of ships from around the world. This week, millions will turn out again for another massive boat parade, united by a shared love of country, pride in our history and hope for the future.
