Study Uncovers Potential Link Between 9/11 Trauma and Accelerated Biological Aging

A recent investigation into World Trade Center (WTC) responders has revealed a potential association between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and specific molecular alterations that suggest accelerated biological aging and an elevated susceptibility to chronic illnesses.

The research, spearheaded by Stony Brook University in New York, aims to provide deeper insights into the long-term physical health consequences of PTSD.

Investigating Molecular Changes

Researchers analyzed blood samples from 393 WTC responders, collected approximately 18 years after the September 11, 2001, attacks. Among the participants, 232 had a PTSD diagnosis, while 161 did not. The study identified significant differences in 114 proteins and seven metabolites between these two groups.

Specifically, the scientists observed changes in blood markers related to crucial bodily functions, including brain activity, immune system responses, energy metabolism, cellular protection against damage, and the mechanisms by which cells communicate and repair tissues.

Furthermore, the study documented indicators of accelerated biological aging in several key organs, such as the heart, kidneys, liver, and lungs, among responders who had PTSD. These findings may help clarify why individuals experiencing long-term PTSD face a greater likelihood of developing chronic conditions like heart disease, lung ailments, cognitive decline, and other age-related health issues.
